To Governor Nikky Haley:
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose Senate Bill 20 and urge Governor Nikky Haley to veto the bill immediately.
On June 21, the South Carolina State Legislature voted in favor of SB20, giving police the authority to check someone’s immigration status during something as simple as a traffic stop. This places an unnecessary burden on the police department and opens the door to racial discrimination, as we have seen in Arizona after the implementation of SB1070.
Senate Bill 20 will drive immigrant families and businesses out of the state, costing the state of South Carolina millions of dollars in lost revenue. At a time when our economy is suffering, South Carolina cannot afford to implement SB20. The bill will also hurt South Carolina’s image and will drive away tourists for fear of being asked for their “papers.”
We believe SB20 unfairly demonizes hard-working immigrants working for a better future. By signing this bill, Governor Haley will consent to hateful anti-immigrant speech that only beings fear into the lives of the immigrant community. Allowing police officers to discriminate against hard-working individuals does nothing to make South Carolina stronger. Instead, SB20 divides our communities through fear and distrust while violating human and civil rights and stifling opportunity.
We urge Governor Haley to step away from hateful language that criminalizes undocumented immigrants by vetoing SB20 immediately. Instead, we urge her to support our immigrant community that contributes significantly to our state’s economy.
