The Petition
To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton, and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:
We, the undersigned, write to humbly request that you take immediate action to stop the deportation of Sandra F. Lopez (A#200-704-493).
Sandra was born in Mexico and was brought to the United States, in 1991, when she was only 3 days old. Despite having lived in Tucson, Arizona for her entire life, Sandra finds herself fighting her deportation to a country that is foreign to her.
Sandra is currently being held in Eloy Detention Center where she is awaiting deportation to Mexico, a country she does not recognize as her own. She could be deported any day now. Sandra’s dream is to stay in the United States so she can continue with her education and contribute to her community. However, her dream won’t become a reality if she is deported back to a country she doesn’t know or remember.
Sandra is an inspiring and loving person. Despite adversity, she was able to maintain an outstanding Grade Point Average throughout her high school career. Sandra was the first in her close family to graduate from high school and received her diploma with dreams of going to college. She attended orientation at her local community college, but was denied admission because of her immigration status. Despite not being able to pursue her own dreams, she continued to encourage her friends and siblings to do well in school and continue their own education. Sandra is determined to go to college and contribute back to a country she has considered her home since she was 3 days old.
Sandra has been forced to fend for herself, both financially and emotionally, since a young age. She grew up in a very low-income household without the money or resources to allow her to pursue her dreams. After having spent over a year in search of employment, a stable living situation, and the opportunity to support herself, Sandra became desperate for funds. In a moment of desperation, Sandra made a bad decision that led to her arrest in September 2010.
Sandra was held in detention for 9 months and was forced to sign a voluntary departure that led to her deportation. She was sent back to Nogales, Mexico, a place that is only 50 minutes away from her real home in Tucson, Arizona. Being in a foreign land, without any money or family to rely on, Sandra decided to return to a country she has considered home since she was 3 days old, to be with her friends and family. However, Sandra was caught and arrested on her way back home and was convicted of a felony for attempting to return back to the only country she knows. Sandra deserves the opportunity to live in the only country that has seen her grow to become an amazing and resilient 20 year old.
Sandra would qualify for the DREAM Act, a narrowly tailored bill that majorities in both the House and the Senate voted to support this past December. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and President Obama have both stated that deporting DREAM-eligible youth is not a priority. We ask that you immediately take action to stop Sandra’s deportation so she can continue to contribute to her community.
We, the undersigned, urge you to take immediate action to stop the deportation of Sandra F. Lopez.
