Rep Nydia Velasquez: Cosponsor the DREAM Act

Targeting: Rep Nydia Velasquez Chief of Staff Michael Day and Legislative Director, Sean Huges.

Several members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) continue to disrespect immigrant youth by refusing to co-sponsor the DREAM Act. These are John T. Salazar (D-CO), Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), and perhaps most embarrassing CHC Chairwoman Nydia Velasquez (D-NY).

The fact that Ms. Velasquez would like a comprehensive solution is no excuse for not cosponsoring the DREAM Act and putting the dreams of her own community on hold. She should follow the example set by Rep. Loretta Sanchez who also held out on the DREAM Act for so many years but decided to co-sponsor it to finally show support for her young constituents.

Ask her to cosponsor and champion a stand-alone DREAM Act bill today. Immigrant youth have waited far too long and we are tired of politicians playing games with our lives.

The Petition

To Rep. Nydia Velasquez:

I am writing to urge you to follow the example of Representative Loretta Sanchez and co-sponsor the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act (HR. 1751).

The DREAM Act is a bipartisan proposal, which would create a pathway to legalization for thousands of young students who were brought to the United States years ago as children. If Congress fails to act this year, another entire class of outstanding, law-abiding high school students will graduate without being able to plan for the future, and some will be removed from their homes to countries they barely know.

This tragedy will cause America to lose a vital asset: an educated class of promising immigrant students who have demonstrated a commitment to hard work and a strong desire to be contributing members of our society.

The DREAM Act is not a substitute for comprehensive immigration solutions but it is a step in the right direction away from enforcement-only solutions and builds support for a broader overhaul by delivering a much-needed victory to immigrant communities devastated by raids and deportations and enabling immigrant youth to step out of the shadows to fight for their families. It really is a no-brainer.

Please co-sponsor the Dream Act immediately and champion it as a standalone bill.

Thank you.
