To Florida Members of Congress:
We, the undersigned, urge our legislators to support House Bill 55, the Florida Dream Act.
The Florida Dream Act, introduced by Representative Bullard, would allow all students in the state who have attended a Florida high school for at least three years to pay in-state tuition rates at Florida’s public colleges and universities. If approved, this bill would bring new opportunities and hopes to thousands of students in the state who wish to continue with their education and become assets to this country.
This bill is a good investment, not only for these students, but for the state of Florida. According to a 1999 RAND study, a college graduate will contribute over $9,000 more than a person with a high school diploma. Allowing students, who have grown up in the state and gone through our K-12 system, to go to college will benefit the state and its residents.
We believe that all students deserve access to affordable education, despite of their immigration status. By voting in favor of the Florida Dream Act, our legislators will step away from the current anti-immigrant rhetoric that brings fear to the community. Instead, they will do what is right and provide viable solutions for students that will benefit all of us.
Over the past years, several institutions of higher education have come out in support of the ‘Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act’ a bill that would have granted conditional permanent status for students who came into the United States as minors, completed two years of college/ enlisted in the military, had good moral characters, and graduated from a U.S. High School.
We, the undersigned, urge our legislators to stand on the side of students and support the Florida Dream Act.
