On July 2nd, Jose was arrested for being outside of his home with a toy BB gun. He was recently transferred to Tacoma Detention Center even though he is DREAM Act eligible!

President Obama said he was not going to deport DREAMers anymore. Why is Jose still detained and awaiting deportation?

The Petition

To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton; and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:

I am writing to call for the immediate release of DREAM Act youth Jose Barreto Alonso (A# 205-29-7854) from Tacoma Detention Center immediately and stop his deportation.

On Monday July 2nd 2012, Jose Barreto Alonso was outside his apartment complex with a $4 BB gun when Portland Police showed up and arrested him. He is currently being held at Tacoma Detention Center even though he qualifies for discretion

President Obama has said that, as of June 15, DREAMers will no longer be deported. Jose is DREAM Act eligible and has been living in this country for 12 years. Why is he being held at Tacoma Detention Center?

Jose was brought to the United States, from Mexico, when he was only eight years old. Now 20 years old, he has lived in Oregon for half of his life. Jose did not graduate from high school; however, he wanted to continue his education and was currently working on obtaining his G.E.D. If deported, he would be sent to a country he does not know and his family and entire community would be devastated by his deportation.

Jose is DREAM Act eligible. According to the June 15 memo issued by DHS, DREAM Act youth should no longer be detained or deported. As such, ICE should release Jose from detention so he can be reunited with his family. Jose has no previous arrests or criminal charges and is a valuable member of his community and church. If President Obama is genuine, Jose will be released from jail immediately.

I urge you to release DREAMer Jose Barreto Alonso (A# 205-29-7854) from Tacoma Detention Center immediately and stop his deportation.
