Will Sen. Gillibrand Side With Immigrant Families?

Update 3/19/13: Werner was transferred to Louisiana for Thursday deportation. It seems ICE is keen on deporting him because of a previous deportation despite having a United States citizen wife and step-daughter.

Optional Talking Points:

<>   Stand up for immigrants!

<>   He has no criminal offenses and his only arrest for a traffic violation resulted in the dismissal of charges.

<>   He is eligible for a marriage petition; deporting him helps no one.

<>   Werner has received several letters of support from community members and an emotional letter from his step-daughter to keep him in the U.S.

<>  It would not be safe for Werner to return to Guatemala, where he has already faced threats from gangs.

The Petition

To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton, and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:

I am writing to ask that you take immediate action to stop the deportation of Werner Arreaga (A# 079-793-292) and release him from Bergen County Jail.

Werner came to the U.S. from Guatemala in 2006 and married his U.S. citizen wife on May 15, 2007. He and his wife raised her daughter, a 12-year-old U.S. citizen Werner has been a father to since she was six years old. Werner has been employed as a mechanic for several years.

Werner has never been convicted of a criminal offense and his only arrest for a traffic offense resulted in a dismissal of charges. He has numerous letters of support from community members and an emotional appeal from his step-daughter to keep her family together.

He returned to the U.S. after a removal because he was threatened by gang members in Guatemala, a prevalent problem in his country of birth. It would not be safe for him to return to Guatemala and an extreme hardship for his wife and step-daughter to move to an unfamiliar country beset by poverty and violence.

I urge you to take immediate action and release Werner Arreaga.
