To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton; and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:
I am writing to call for the immediate release of DREAMer Alfonso Perez (A# 205-151-137) from Henderson Detention Center in Nevada. Alfonso qualifies for the June 15 DHS Memo for DREAM Act eligible youth and should’ve never been detained.
Alfonso was abandoned by his parents in Mexico and was brought to the United States, by his grandmother, when he was only 4 years old. After twenty years of living in this country, Alfonso was detained by ICE on July 26, 2012 at 6:00 a.m. when he walked outside of his apartment to go to work. Alfonso has not been provided with shoes while in detention, nor has his family been allowed to provide any for him.
President Obama has stated that, as of June 15, DREAM Act youth will no longer be detained or deported. Alfonso was detained one month after the announcement was made and has yet to be released. Why is Alfonso, a DREAM Act eligible youth, still detained?
Alfonso is a dedicated father to his 14-month old baby and is a loving partner to his fiancée. Alfonso works as a landscaper in order to provide a better life for his family. He is the sole financial provider for his baby and fiancée, who are struggling without his support. He wishes to become a Registered Nurse to help heal his community. In fact, he has been working with elderly and disabled people since he was 16 years old.
According to the June 15 memo issued by DHS, Alfonso should be released immediately and be given deferred action given that he qualifies for the DREAM Act. Alfonso’s only wish is to be reunited with his family and continue with his education to help the most in need. Alfonso’s family is distraught by his incarceration and his 14-month old baby misses him terribly.
I urge you to release DREAM Act youth Alfonso Perez from Henderson Detention Center in Nevada and stop his deportation.
