To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton, and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:
I write to ask for the immediate release of Maria de la Luz (A#200-298-875), currently being detained in immigration prison at the Calhoun County Jail. Maria has been living in the U.S. for over 9-years; she’s always paid taxes and has been active in her community.
In July of 2012 Maria’s trailer in Grand Rapids, Michigan was raided and she was arrested for having false documents. Despite only having the fake papers to work and provide for her family, Maria was sentenced to 8-months in jail. In March of 2013, Maria was transferred to ICE custody and told she had no choice but to take Voluntary Departure.
Maria is currently coughing up blood. Since being imprisoned by immigration Maria has developed several health problems. Maria has a cyst in her ovaries which is not being treated,“ICE tells me they don’t care about my health; they say ‘why spend money on you when we plan on deporting you?’” Maria has complained numerous times, however each time she is simply given non-prescription Advil and told to “deal with it.”
Michigan ICE Field Director Rebecca Adducci has a track-record of ignoring directives from national ICE. In April of 2011, and again October of 2012, she ordered her agents to detaine parents outside a local elementary school. In January of 2012 Director Adducci refused to grant discretion in the case of Yanelli Hernandez, a DREAMer who had attempted suicide twice while in detention.
On Director Adducci’s watch over 4200 ICE detainers have been issued in the state of Michigan; of those nearly 80% were against individuals with no prior contact with law enforcement.
Maria has done her time; she doesn’t deserve to be tortured in detention. I urge you to take immediate action to bring oversight to a rogue Michigan ICE; Maria de la Luz (A#200-298-875) is in need of immediate medical attention and should be released so she can receive it.
