The Petition

To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton; and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:

I write to ask that Francisco Perez-Jimenez (A# 200-665-321) immediately be released from the Broward Transitional Center in Florida. On June 22nd Francisco attempted to take his own life and tried to commit suicide. His current situation is unbearable. He should be released so he can seek treatment with his family.

Francisco has been detained at Broward for the past 4 months after ICE picked him up for fishing in private property. He has been away from his wife and 4 month old baby, who he hasn’t seen since the baby was born. Francisco became so desperate while in detention, that he attempted to take his own life because he thought he would never see his baby again. He is currently being kept under ICE custody while he is at the Atlantic Shores Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale.

Francisco came to the United States, in search of a better life, five years ago. He is currently 26 years old and has built a life for himself in Orlando, Florida. While in detention, Francisco became good friends with Marvin, who were helping fight his deportation while in detention. Marvin would often tell Francisco that there were people who were going to help them. When Marvin was released, Francisco lost the little hope he had of ever getting out and reuniting with his family and attempted suicide.

Francisco needs to be released immediately so he can get treatment and so he can finally be reunited with his wife and infant baby. Francisco’s wife is desperate to get him back so they can raise their baby together, as a family. According to John Morton’s memo, Francisco is a low-priority case and should be granted favorable exercise of prosecutorial discretion. Unless he is released, Francisco will continue to suffer without getting the proper treatment for his depression.

I urge ICE to release Francisco Perez-Jimenez from Broward Transitional Center in Florida.
