To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton; and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:
I am writing to call for the immediate release of Miguel Angel Amparo (A# 089-722-100) from Broward Transitional Center and urge ICE to stop his deportation.
On July 4th, Miguel was with a friend’s family driving to the beach to see the Fourth of July fireworks when he was stopped at an ICE checkpoint. Miguel was asked for his documents and, when he couldn’t provide them with proof of identification, they arrested him. Despite being a low-priority case, Miguel was transferred to the Broward Transitional Center where he has been ever since.
Miguel is originally from the Dominican Republic and has been living in the United States since 2002. Miguel is currently 44 years old and has a U.S. citizen partner who has been living with him for the past three years. Miguel’s partner relies on him to support her and, if deported, she will be forced to move to the Dominican Republic with him, separating her from her entire family. Miguel is a hard-worker who wants nothing more than to provide for his loved ones. He is a good person who doesn’t deserve to be detained.
For each day Miguel is detained tax-payers are spending $166 for his detention. Miguel only wanted to go to the beach to see some fireworks and now tax-payers have spent over $2,324 keeping him in detention. According to the memo issued by John Morton, Miguel is a low-priority case and should be granted favorable exercise of prosecutorial discretion.
I urge you to release Miguel from Broward Transitional Center and stop his deportation so he can be reunited with his family.
