Maurino has been detained at Broward Transitional Center since June 1, despite being a low-priority case. He has a 2 month old baby with his girlfriend. Maurino was the main provider for his family and now his girlfriend can barely afford to pay rent and basic necessities such as diapers for their baby. Maurino must be released to his family immediately!

Maurino's only hope is for Sen. Nelson / Sen. Rubio to intervene.

The Petition

To Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, John Morton; and Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:

I am writing to call for the immediate release of Maurino Callejas (A# 205345394) from Broward Transitional Center and urge ICE to immediately stop his deportation. Maurino was sexually abused by his foster parents when he was only 16 years old and is in the process of applying for a U-Visa. According to the Morton Memo, he is a low-priority deportation and should be released immediately.

On June 1, Maurino was on his way to home from work when he was stopped by a police officer. The officer found fake documents in his car. Maurino has been through a lot. He was sexually abused by his foster parents and forced to work from an early age. Since he was forced to work, he had no choice but to get documents that would help him get a job. Despite being a low-priority case and a victim of violence, he has been detained at BTC for over 2 months.

Maurino came to the United States from Mexico in 2004 when he was 13 years old. Now 21, he works to support his siblings and girlfriend financially. Maurino and his girlfriend have been together for 4 year and they have a 2 month old baby that was born on May 23rd. Maurino’s girlfriend can barely afford to pay rent or essentials for their baby, including diapers! She also has a 7 year old daughter who sees Maurino as her dad and is depressed over his detention.

According to the memo issued by John Morton, Maurino is a low-priority case and should be granted favorable exercise of prosecutorial discretion. Maurino has no criminal record. His only wish is to be released so he can raise his 2-month old baby with his girlfriend of 4 years. Let Maurino be reunited with his family.

I urge you to release Maurino Callejas from Broward Transitional Center and stop his deportation.
