Florida Atlantic University: Drop the GEO Group!

On Tuesday, February 19th, the Florida Atlantic University announced that the GEO Group would be sponsoring their athletic stadium.

If you are as outraged as we are please sign the petition and urge the leadership of FAU to reconsider this move.

The Broward Detention Center, a GEO run facility is mere miles away from the FAU campuses and is the site of numerious health violations. Several detainees at the facility have attempted suicide as a result of their treatment by GEO gaurds.

FAU should not be associating itself with a prison!

The Petition

To: Florida Atlantic University President, Board of Trustees and Athletic Director:

I write to express my concern over your recent decision to allow your football stadium to be named the GEO Group Stadium. Surely Florida Atlantic University does not endorse the actions of this company? The GEO Group Inc. serves as the United States second largest operator of private prisons and has a track-record of destroying communities all for a mere profit. I want you to know that I will no longer support FAU athletics until this decision is reversed.

The company formerly operated the infamous Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility (WGYCF) in Mississippi, where a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into abuses concluded that "due to the unconstitutional operation of WGYCF, youth were sexually preyed upon by staff and all too frequently suffered grievous harm, including death."

I am outraged that the President Saunders recently praised the GEO Group, "They're a wonderful company and we're very proud to be partnered with them."

The GEO Group does not benefit the community in Florida, rather it separates thousands of parents from their children; breaking up families on a daily basis. You can find evidence of GEO’s atrocities and poor management in the locally run Broward Detention Center (BTC), which houses nearly 700 men and women.

Last summer, The National Immigrant Youth Alliance infiltrated the facility to experience first-hand the plight of local immigrants. “We found that most detainees were jailed for minor offenses, such as driving without a valid driver’s license. The worst part about it wasn’t really even the treatment they received from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE); but rather how the GEO staff and the GEO guards treat all detainees. They treated us all like animals. Several detainees attempted suicide, all of this mere miles from the FAU campus!”

Recently, several members of Congress issued a letter asking for a complete review of this particular GEO run facility; one that is located in your backyard and may even be the home of the parents of some of your students.

It is my understanding that Mr. George Zoley, Chairman of the GEO Group, an FAU alumnus, has served in various prestigious committees; including, the Board of Directors of the FAU Foundation. I am appalled and disturbed that a public institution of higher education would allow such a person to serve as a member of any board or committee, much less accept donations from a corporation who benefits from the incarceration of millions of people worldwide.

I urge you to immediately rescind this decision, and to sever any and all connections FAU may have with the GEO Group. OwlCatraz needs to go!
