The Petition
To Governor Brown:
We, the undersigned, urge Governor Brown to immediately sign Assembly Bill 131, the real California DREAM Act, into law.
The California DREAM Act was first introduced in 2006. It would allow qualifying undocumented college students to apply for institutional financial aid and Cal Grants from the University of California, California State University and Community Colleges.
Every year, approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high schools across the nation. About 40 percent of those undocumented youth reside in the state of California. Many of them are honor students, promising athletes, student body presidents, community leaders and aspiring professionals, but because of their immigration status they are unable to access higher education.
The CA Dream Act has gained the support of businesses and several chambers of commerce, among them the Greater Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. The California Federation of Teachers, the Los Angeles City Council, the California State Student Association, the University of California and the Los Angeles Unified School District, have all endorsed the CA Dream Act. Several newspapers, such as the Los Angeles Times and the Sacramento Bee, have also voiced their support and urged the passage of this bill.
During Gov. Brown’s campaign last year, he promised that if elected he would sign the CA Dream Act into law. But he is yet to keep that promise. Governor Brown has until October 9th to sign this bill into law and prove that this was not just another “empty promise”.
At a time when the economic projections for the state of California suggest that by 2025, two of every five jobs will require a college graduate, we must ensure that all California students have equal access to higher education. Therefore, we the undersigned urge immediate passage and signature into law of the California DREAM Act.
Sincerely,
