Take Action in Alabama!

URGENT!

Alabama's Governor just signed House bill 56 into law.  Think how bad the Arizona and Georgia bills have been, this bill is worse than all of them.

We need you to take immediate action to help stop the implementation of this bill.  Sign the petition asking the Obama administration to step in.

Just to give you a sense of how bad this bill is, here are a few bullet points:

- Bill bans undocumented youth from all colleges and universities

- Bill requires all K-12 school children to prove immigration status

- Bill requires parents of children to sign an affidavit with school as to their own immigration status

- Bill requires implementation of E-Verify across the state

This measure needs to be stopped! Sign the petition to tell President Obama to step in and stop this law!

The Petition

To President Obama and his Administration:

We, the undersigned, urge the Obama Administration to immediately step in to prevent the implementation of these draconian laws.

On June 9th 2011, Governor Robert Bentley of Alabama signed into law the country’s strictest immigration law to date. The newly signed bill, mirrored after Arizona’s SB1070, would require police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they deem “suspicious” of not having proper documentation. Furthermore, Alabama’s immigration law would require public schools to determine a student’s immigration status, causing school officials to act as Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement agents. The law also seeks to implement the flawed E-Verify program and makes it a crime for anyone to give undocumented immigrants a ride, creating an atmosphere of fear among undocumented immigrants and U.S. citizens alike.

Alabama’s immigration law will place an unnecessary burden on school administrations, businesses, and Alabama residents. These types of anti-immigrant legislation will drive immigrant families and businesses out of Alabama, causing the state to lose revenue. The bill will also hurt Alabama’s image and will drive away tourists for fear of being asked for their “papers.” At a time when our economy is suffering, Alabama cannot afford to implement this type of draconian law.

We believe this law, to be implemented on September 1st 2011, unfairly demonizes hard-working immigrants working for a better future. In addition, there is the potential for this law to be deemed unconstitutional. The Supreme Court decision, Plyler v. Doe, ruled that states are prohibited from denying access to education to all students, documented or undocumented. However, creating an atmosphere of distrust between school principals and families could potentially cause some students to be excluded from attending these public institutions.

The Obama administration has the responsibility to step in to prevent the implementation of this extreme law in Alabama, just as it intervened in Arizona before the implementation of SB1070. It is time for this administration to stand on the side of justice and equality by blocking this, and other, anti-immigrant legislation. We cannot continue to criminalize the immigrant community by bringing fear into their every-day lives. It is imperative that the Obama administration show its support for immigrants by stopping the implementation of these severe anti-immigrant laws.

We, the undersigned, urge the Obama Administration to immediately step in to prevent the implementation of these anti-immigrant laws.
